FOR 2017-2018 LIVE CHEER TRYOUTS:

  • Thursday, May 11th, 2017 - 7:00-9:00pm (optional open gym - please bring waiver to participate)

  • Friday, May 12th, 2017 - 6:00-9:00pm (required to attend for material)
  • Saturday, May 13th, 2017 - 9:00am-4:00pm (live tryout)


During the Cheer/STUNT Team live tryouts, you will be learning/performing the following below.  Suggested applicant attire - Cal Poly t-shirt/apparel, cheer shorts, cheer shoes, and hair up in pony tail (bows are always welcome).  

  • Forms:
    1. TRYOUT APPLICATION (available for now for download)
    2. WAIVER (must be signed by parent/guardian if minor; available for now for download) 
  • Interview:
    1. You may be asked a few questions throughout the tryout process
  • Cheer:
    1. Material will be taught at tryout
  • Dance:
    1. Material will be taught at tryout
  • Jumps:
    1. 1 toe-touch
    2. 1 double toe-touch
    3. 1 left/right front hurdler
    4. 1 pike
    5. 3 jump combination of your choice (jumps must be connected and tumbling may be added)
  • Standing tumbling:
    1. Minimum required - back handspring; jumps may be added
  • Running tumbling:
    1. If any, not required but highly recommended; show elite passes
  • Stunts (all girl and/or co-ed; you will stunt with returning and other prospective team members):
    1. Single base extension and/or double base extension
    2. Liberty (extended)
    3. Heel stretch (extended)
    4. Twist/full down cradle from one legged extended stunt (can be in connection with required liberty or heel stretch)
    5. You may add any additional stunts showing your most elite skills

The team will be selected at the conclusion of the tryouts.  If you are selected, there will be a mandatory meeting immediately following tryouts. Please be prepared to stay until 6:00pm.  We will discuss the expectations of being a Cal Poly Cheer/STUNT Team member, schedule, and get sized for uniforms (if new member, please be prepared to purchase your uniform that day, approximately $300-400).


FOR 2017-2018 CHEER VIDEO TRYOUTS: 

Videos will no longer be accepted; you must contact Coach to make arrangements for alternate live tryout/video.

Videos submissions are for incoming freshman or transfer students new to the University.   All returning or current students MUST attend the live tryout or schedule an alternate live video tryout date prior to deadline.  It is highly recommended that you attend the live tryout. If you are unable to make it to the tryouts, please send us a video or contact Coach Annette Laron-Pickett to arrange an alternate tryout date prior to the deadline. 

Please include all of the following in your video (incomplete videos will not be judged): 

PLEASE BE SURE TO HIGHLIGHT YOURSELF OR WEAR SPECIFIC CAL POLY ATTIRE TO DISTINGUISH YOURSELF FROM OTHER PEOPLE IN VIDEO.

  • Information (state/answer the following):
    1. Full name
    2. Age
    3. Year in college
    4. Major 
    5. Why you would like to join the Cal Poly Cheer/STUNT Team?
    6. What is your previous cheer experience? Please include school and/or gym you cheer for with what level or team.
    7. If you could choose one song that would be played every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what song would that be and why?
    8. What assets would you bring to the Cal Poly Cheer/STUNT Team?
  • Cheer:
    1. Sideline or chant (use your school sideline or chant - replace colors & words with Cal Poly/Green and Gold/Mustangs)
  • Dance:
    1. 8 eight counts or 4 eight counts repeated (you may use your school fight song/band dance)
  • Jumps:
    1. 1 toe-touch
    2. 1 double toe-touch
    3. 1 left/right front hurdler
    4. 1 pike
    5. 3 jump combination of your choice (jumps must be connected and tumbling may be added)
  • Standing tumbling:
    1. Minimum required - back handspring; jumps may be added
  • Running tumbling:
    1. If any, not required but highly recommended; show elite passes
  • Stunts (all girl and/or co-ed – each stunt must be filmed 2 times in a row with no editing; be sure to indicate if you are the base, top or back spot:
    1. Single base extension and/or double base extension
    2. Liberty (extended)
    3. Heel stretch (extended)
    4. Twist/full down cradle from one legged extended stunt (can be in connection with required liberty or heel stretch)

Possible phone interview will be conducted prior to the live tryout date.  Notification of team selection will be via phone call at the conclusion of the live tryout.
